European integration has long been skewed towards the economy. Proposals for parallel social integration have been around for many years but only got a real boost with the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights in 2017.
In the electoral year to come, its 20 principles on equal opportunities and access to the labour market, fair working conditions, social poverty and inclusion remind European institutions and member states not to forget the social dimension of the European integration process. And, against the backdrop of public anger and rapidly advancing far-right movements, they certainly remind Progressives to put the Pillar of Social Rights high on their electoral agenda.
This new Progressive Post dossier aims to highlight the importance of the EU’s social rights, for every European citizen, and especially as the centre-piece of the upcoming electoral campaign, as, ultimately, these European elections will be about the European society we want for the future.
