As part of a global just transition, there is an urgent need for equity-based parameters for the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels and the accompanying phase-in of renewable energy. The broad objective of “transitioning away from fossil fuels” must be turned into a concrete, equitable just transition governance framework that simultaneously phases out fossil supply and demand and phases in renewable, nature-positive, people-centred energy systems in a fair and equitable manner. The EU has a key role to play to keep ambition high, promote justice and support actionable measures, especially in its relations with African countries.

The hybrid seminar, organised by FEPS in collaboration with the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), will discuss the role of the EU in supporting a just transition from fossil fuels to clean energy in Africa and the desires and aspirations of African countries in this vital process. The seminar will bring together diverse stakeholders, with and without expertise on the topic at hand, for a rich and open discussion.

The event will reflect on the outcomes of COP30 and look forward to COP31 and, especially, COP32 to be hosted by Ethiopia. The discussion will also integrate the implementation agenda of two recent summits of direct relevance: the 2nd Africa Climate Summit and the 7th EU-Africa Heads of State Summit.
