The State of the Left: Labour and lessons from across Europe

Meeting from 18.00 – 19.30, Manchester, UK – Town Hall, Committee Room 2

FEPS and Policy Network Fringe Meeting at the Labour Party Conference

FEPS together with Policy Network will continue reflection on state of the centre-left across the EU, which within the FEPS Next Left Research Programme and Policy Network diverse initiatives already featured meetings in Berlin and Oxford already this year. Following the spring elections in France and the recent ones in the Netherlands, it seems that there is more optimism regarding the potential of the progressive message to inspire public debates and mobilise the voters. An additional aspect is the one of enhanced public pro-Europeanism, which is especially significant in those two countries – which are remembered for their “No” in the referenda on Constitutional Treaty in 2005. The panel will consider these different developments and try to assess how pan-European and how sustainable these tendencies of growing support for social democratic agenda are.
