Gerhard Marchl has been Head of the Department for European Politics at the Karl-Renner-Institut in Vienna since 2011. The Karl-Renner-Institut serves as the political academy of the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPÖ). His work focuses primarily on political developments in the Western Balkans and Central and Eastern Europe.

Gerhard Marchl studied History and French at the Universities of Graz and Grenoble. He holds a doctorate from the University of Graz and is also a graduate of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.

In addition to his professional work, Gerhard Marchl is actively involved in civil society initiatives. Most recently, he served as Co-President of EuroGames Vienna 2024, a major LGBTIQ+ sporting event that brought together around 4,000 participants from across Europe and beyond.
