Developed first in Latin America in the ’80s, the Participatory Budgeting has first make his appearance in Europe in few small cities. Over the last decade however, to respond to the economic crisis as well as to that of representative democracy, a number of local governments have tested and introduced this new means of democratic engagement all around Europe. Nowadays, Participatory Budgeting is a reality for the citizens of some of the main European cities: Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Milan. Overall, already millions of European citizens in over 3000 European cities have been involved in this participatory process. Will it become the norm?
