Serving as the second leg of the inaugural FEPS-CAP transatlantic dialogue, a closed-door meeting will take place in Brussels, bringing together the same transatlantic advisory group of experts from both sides of the Atlantic which met in Washington D.C. in December 2018. The focus of the meeting will be on the topic of what a progressive response can be towards the retreat of democracy and the rise of authoritarianism on a global level. This meeting will be aimed at deepening the findings of the first one and allowing the group to provide substantive feedback.

This is a closed meeting

The topics that will be discussed are the following:

Insecurity factors

  • Topic 1: Globalization / global inequalities / economic unrest
  • Topic 2: Challenges to the international rules-based multilateral order / great power competition

Symptoms

  • Topic 3: Global retreat of democracy
  • Topic 4: Growing internal challenges (rise of nationalism via use of populism)
  • Topic 5: Democracies defending themselves against foreign interference

The intention at the end of this process is to come forward with a comprehensive paper combining the insights of the members of the group into one coherent whole. The paper is expected to be published by the end of the year.
