Dr. Alfred Gusenbauer, former Chancellor of Austria and the Chair of the FEPS Next Left research programme, gave a speech at the Salvador Allende Symposium in Chile, which was held in Santiago de Chile on 4th – 5th September 2013. The event was held within the framework of activities commemorating 40 years since the break out of the coup d’etat and the death of President Allende on 11th September 2013. The activities are to remind that human rights and freedom should never be taken for granted – and that social democracy all around the world has a historical duty to uphold their commitments in the name of solidarity to strive for lasting peace and democracy.
