This speech given by Massimo D’Alema, President of FEPS, at the 23rd Edition of the Economic Forum of Krynica Zdrój addresses many aspects of the complex relationship between Russian and NATO. He looks at Russia’s attitude to outside interference and the state self-perception as a “sovereign democracy”. He examines the transition from US unipolarity to the present “unbalanced multipolarity”. Amid all of this, Mr D’Alema further address the level of distrust in present day geopolitics and the prevalence of non-traditional threats, from global warming and pandemics to energy crises and non-state terrorism, that make the Westphalian political approach obsolete. Such references chart the way for a more nuanced approach in a post-Atlantic world.
