The Foundation for European Progressive Studies, its President, Massimo D’Alema, and its Secretary General, Ernst Stetter, would like to extend their deepest congratulations to António Guterres on his election as the Secretary General of the United Nations. Mr Guterres, a true progressive at heart, mind and action, is uniquely qualified to lead the institution in today’s perilous and highly complex world.

During his tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, he has proven that he is a powerful advocate for progressive, compassionate and just solutions to the problems of today and tomorrow.

Due to this, we strongly believe that his experience, competence, vision, and integrity will provide an invaluable compass to navigate the United Nations through the confluence of challenges that the world and Europe are facing.

We wish him well in his very significant role and mission.
