Calling for open debate on immigration, the President of FEPS, Massimo D’Alema said immediately that progressives should be bold enough to seize the subject honestly, “fighting the prejudices, while defending solidarity and respect for human rights but also admitting that solidarity is not enough and that we must control the phenomenon.” He introduced the crucial issue of integration to the heart of the debate. In this context, he called for a clear contract between the host country and immigrants, which implies that everyone has “rights and duties”.
