👁️New Recovery Watch available! The Recovery Watch is a structured network of experts monitoring the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRPs), and assessing their impact on key social outcomes. This week we focus on three angles: energy and transport, digital transition and territorial inequalities.

This research project is led by FEPS, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and Institut Emile Vandervelde (IEV), in collaboration with several first-rate research organisations.
How do the NRRPs fare?

This policy study focuses on the social impact of the digital transition on workers. It poses the question of the Recovery and Resilience Facility‘s (RRF) contribution to preparing member states for the digital transformation by maximising its benefits, minimising its costs, and distributing both benefits and costs equitably. Assessing the potential systemic transformation of EU Member States’ energy and mobility sectors through their NRRPs

Was the NRRPs’ implementation transformative with regard to their contexts and investment needs, or was it just a (greening of) business as usual?

This study analyses the energy and transport sectors‘ pre-pandemic states in four EU Member States: Austria, France, Germany, and Spain, to understand the potential impact of NRRPs. Read more.

This policy study addresses the potential impact of the NRRPs on territorial inequalities and the sustainable well-being of people across Europe, particularly of citizens living in left-behind places.

In this publication, the author analyses whether and how the NRRPs of Italy, Portugal and Spain have adopted a place-based perspective, with particular attention to territorial cohesion. Read more.

16 January – Vienna, Austria (Hybrid)

Paying tribute to Barbara Prammer, a staunch women’s rights defender in Austria, FEPS, the SPÖ Federal Women, the Karl-Renner-Institut, and the SPÖ Parliament Club join forces for the 9th Barbara Prammer Symposium.

In light of the multiple crises and soaring energy bills having a disproportionate impact on women, this year’s overarching theme will focus on how the welfare state affects gender equality. We will apply a gender lens on issues ranging from distributive justice to wealth taxation, labour, equality and recovery.

19-20 January – Recife, Brazil (Hybrid)

FEPS, together with Plataforma Cipó, the Stimson Center and other partners, will convene in Recife, Brazil, to engage in the third Global Policy Dialogue (GPD).

The GPD provides a platform to discuss innovative solutions for addressing the intersection between climate change, biodiversity, nature loss, pollution, and waste. The conference brings together a diverse group from UN Missions, think tanks, universities, and other civil society organisations.

23 January – Lisbon, Portugal

FEPS, together with the Karl-Renner-Institut and the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS), is co-hosting a high-level Next Left conference on ‘Right-wing extremism and our progressive duty to fight it’.

Among the participants, we can find renowned speakers such as Jamila Madeira, PS International Secretary; José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, former Spanish Prime Minister; Maria João Rodrigues, FEPS President; Andreas Schieder, Head of the EP S&D Austrian Delegation, and Chair of the Next Left Research Program.

26 January – FEPS HQ, Brussels

FEPS is launching the fourth edition of one of its most unique yearly publications: the Progressive Yearbook. On the same occasion, our Secretary General László Andor will reveal and interview FEPS personality of the year.

The Progressive Yearbook focuses on transversal European issues that have left a mark on 2022 and brings insightful future-looking analysis for the new year. This yearly edition counts on renowned authors’ contributions, including academics, politicians, and civil society representatives.

Recovery Watch outcomes and the event on National Recovery & Resilience Plans — which took place in Rome in December — attracted a lot of media attention in Italian media, be it in the press, such as Corriere della sera and Il Fatto Quotidiano, or in the radio, such as Radio Popolare or Radio Vaticana.

Together with about 50 scientists from the environmental area and former politicians from Brazil and Portugal, FEPS President Maria João Rodrigues signed a manifesto giving international impetus to the environmental policy of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The manifesto calls for climate concerns to be at the centre of the agreement between the EU and Mercosur. It was widely shared in the media, such as News Bulletin, Público and Visâo.

🎙️Professor Gerhard Stahl, member of FEPS Scientific Council, and László Andor, FEPS Secretary General, talk about the latest book by Stahl, which focuses on China.

They analyse the future scenarios of the EU-China relationship. They also explore the specificities of Chinese economic and social developments, as well as other aspects of China’s relations with the rest of the world: technology and investment policies, Covid-19, and regional security.

While looking for a genuine European strategy, the discussants look into two critical questions in this conversation: Why Russia’s international behaviour cannot be compared to the Chinese? What role is the US playing between cooperation and confrontation?
