Demystify Land Reform in Southern Africa!

With ANC Youth League president Malema calling for the expropriation of land without compensation, land reform has come into focus once again. This reflects Robert Mugabe’s actions in Zimbabwe when he confiscated land owned by whites in 2000 to offset his loss of the support of his people. Both populist politicians exploit the emotions of the masses and the association between African liberation struggles and land. Thiscomparative article looks at the efforts at land reform in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and the successes, failures and challenges therein.
