Parenting is a challenging task. Our societies have moved away from the traditional family model arrangements, but social policies have not adequately followed these societal changes. Access to child care, health care services, employment challenges, division of household tasks are just a few among the multiple challenges that parents have to face. Managing the increased expectations renders parenting an ambiguous experience, putting parents under more pressure and stress than ever before. How can we deliver on the changing and various aspirations within the society?

The conference is will seek to find an answer to this question. Next to the moral arguments, we should also keep economic figures in mind. As the European Commission pointed out, aging is one of the greatest social and economic challenges of the 21st century for European societies. It will affect all EU countries and most policy areas. [By 2025 more than 20% of Europeans will be 65 or over, with a particularly rapid increase in numbers of over-80s.]

Supporting parents, mothers, fathers, single parents and care workers has become a question of major importance, a question of social and economic stability in our future societies. The conference will put forward and highlight the specific challenges that the Baltics face with regard to the social integration of parents, and will put forward short- and long-term strategies to better support care workers.
