The 2016 U.S. Presidential election has been a polarizing event, both in the United States and Europe. Foreign policy has taken center stage in several debates, with a focus on national security policies covering everything from immigration to counter-terrorism. Following the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels and Paris a particular focus has been placed on counter-terrorism, both on how to prevent such attacks on U.S. soil as well as how to increase cooperation with European allies on counter-terrorism efforts. In light of these events, what sort of policies can we expect the presidential candidates to pursue and how do counter-terrorism strategies differ between the leading Democrat and Republican candidates? What kind of impact do we expect the Presidential race to have on President Obama’s legacy and on the transatlantic relationship?

The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) in cooperation with the German Marshall Fund of the United States are jointly organising a panel discussion on the latest developments in the 2016 U.S. elections race and the role of counter-terrorism policy in the upcoming debates and next administration. The event will be held on Monday, June 27th, 2016, 12:00 – 14:00, at the FEPS office, Rue Montoyer 40. The discussion will feature the participation of Mr. Ken Gude, Senior Fellow, Center for American Progress, and Dr. Christiane Hoehn, Principal Advisor to the EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator, European Council.

This event forms part of a general series of events that FEPS will be co-orgaining across Europe focusing on the US election and its impact on foreign policy and various other aspects of the transatlantic relationship.
