After the winter break, FEPS team is back with recharged batteries and ready to continue making a difference.

Unfortunately, this week has been marked by the heartbreaking loss of David Sassoli. The EU and the progressive family lost a real leader, a fighter for democracy and European integration, and a kind man. Our thoughts are with his family and close friends. He will be incredibly missed.

Migrant key workers and social cohesion in Europe

This week, FEPS and TASC presented their latest study investigating the working and living conditions of migrants employed in the agricultural and care sectors in Europe.

Focusing on Germany, Greece, Ireland, and Spain, the study aims to assess how these conditions impact the migrants’ daily lives and their capability to partake in community life. It also considers to what extent improper legislation hinders – rather than facilitates – migrants’ inclusion.

Migrant key workers and social cohesion in Europe

Migration has become one of Europe’s most politically divisive issues. This Policy Study concentrates on two critical sectors – agriculture and care – that depend on migrant labour to function, and it demonstrates that migrant workers are often invisible in society, routinely subjected to exploitative working conditions, denied the basic social rights and protections afforded to local workers.

Yet, enabling migrant workers to actively participate in the social, civic and political life of their communities is key to building solidarity and fostering more resilient and cohesive societies across Europe.

Integration of migrants:

the path to social cohesion

Years after the humanitarian emergency of 2015-16, the debate over migration is still very polarised. It continues to be instrumentalised by policymakers and is still portrayed as an emergency and a threat, even if the number of asylum seekers and migrants trying to get into the EU are just a few thousands, as those, recently, coming via Belarus.

No real progress in the most divisive aspect of the Commission’s Pact on Asylum and Migration is in sight: the reform of the Dublin regulation. Read more
