More on complex issues: the future of armament and especially disarmament in this period of tension. Join us if you are an expert on the topic because we want to know your thoughts!

You do not need to be an expert instead to join us for climate policy breakfasts, being a human being inhabiting our planet earth is the only requirement. Climate justice and the interactions between climate, health and inequality concern us all. Let’s find universally fair solutions.

The talk about the EU Strategic Autonomy is back in the spotlight given Russia’s war against Ukraine and the discussion about EU relationships with key partners such as the US and China.

In collaboration with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and Fondation Jean-Jaurès, we explore motivations for strengthening the global role of the euro and suggest economic policies towards that end. We also review the main limiting factors for the wider use of the euro. Read more.

The climate crisis constitutes the largest threat to public health in the 21st century, from which several climate-sensitive direct or indirect health risks emerge.
Its health impact grows even worse when it falls on groups with lower socio-economic status.

At this policy breakfast, we’ll discuss the findings of the ‘Climate and health‘ policy brief, with MEP Sara Cerdas and two of the co-authors, exploring the risks of acting in silos and thus neglecting the interactions between climate, health and inequality. In cooperation with FES, we’ll look for potential synergies when establishing a sound climate-health-inequality nexus.

25 April – FEPS HQ – Expert meeting – Hybrid

How might growing levels of confrontation and mistrust on the international stage affect human security and drivers of conflict in the long term?
What factors or actors could help reinvigorate arms control and non-proliferation regimes?

We will discuss these questions during the fourth expert roundtable of the Foresight project ‘The long-term implications of the war in Ukraine‘, which will focus on issues of the prospects for arms control, disarmament, non-proliferation, technological innovation, conflict prevention, and human security.

In cooperation with FES, we discussed the findings of the ‘Climate justice principles‘ policy brief and the ethical principles required to understand the consequences of the climatic crisis we are living in.
Co-author and political philosopher, Carl Knight, offered a unique insight into the justice and injustice alternatives of policy interventions. With Luc Bas, IUCN CEESP Vice-Chair, and Namita Kambli, E3G Research Manager, we evaluated principles that can guide fair climate action from a global distributive justice perspective.

18 April – Oslo, Norway

How will AI change the way we work? What are the effects of Algorithmic Management on workers?
FEPS has created a Digital Programme with our Nordic partners to investigate these issues. We went to Oslo to start our work. We heard from the lead researchers of the different research tracks on their plans to do company case studies, field surveys and data analysis. Thanks to the input of several distinguished academics, experts and union representatives, we got valuable feedback on our research design. We will gradually publish the results of the different studies on AI in the workplace.

Quick-commerce is a service that offers superfast delivery from ‘dark stores’ to the consumer. Gerard Oosterwijk, FEPS’ Digital Policy Analyst, interviewed Rachel Verdin, Research fellow of the University of Sussex Business School.
She and a team of researchers investigated Germany, Spain and the UK, where they unveiled the worker-intensive methods used by those firms, the health consequences for the employees, their job security and social rights. They discussed how this sector overlaps with the broader gig economy, and what we can expect for the future, as the venture capital that has funded unsustainably low delivery prices and loss-making firms is drying up.
