We need a paradigm shift, and a Just Transition is the only acceptable way forward. We believe that the EU needs a New Social Contract in which social and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. We know that we need to act now, and we invite you to join us in our Call to Action.

While in other news, we read that deaths in the Mediterranean are on the rise. The EU must act now to improve the situation and change its approach to a more humane one. You can read our latest book and listen to the new episode of FEPS Talks, where we share our ideas for better management of asylum and migration in the EU.

The EU’s approach to asylum and migration is failing because it is contrary to the values that the Union proclaims.

A pragmatic and humane response to the challenges posed by the refugee protection crisis can be found in municipalities and their active civil society.

Gesine Schwan outlines a detailed proposal on how to engage municipalities and civil society initiatives in the relocation and reception of migrants and asylum seekers. The proposal will not be a panacea for the complex EU migration and refugee policy. Yet, the tools illustrated in this book could benefit the hosting communities as much as the newcomers. Read more.

Policies and pacts for better migration

🎙️In this new episode, László Andor, FEPS Secretary General, and Steffen Angenendt, Senior Fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, assess the efforts of the EU, which has been trying to complete a ‘migration pact’ and the reasons for various European governments taking diverse positions.
Angenendt suggests improvements in the practice of managing migration through EU borders and underlines the importance of dialogue between European and African experts.

11 July – Valladolid, Spain

Together with SOLIDAR, Movimiento por la Paz
and Asamblea de Cooperación por la Paz, we gathered with representatives of civil society organisations, trade unions, think tanks and foundations from Spain and other EU Member States, for a timely exchange of views on acting together for a Just Transition. Teresa Ribera, Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and Zakia Khattabi, Federal Minister for Climate, Environment, Sustainable Development and Green Deal of Belgium, joined us, too.
Europe needs a new Social Contract that links the fight against climate change with the fight against inequality. The Belgian and Spanish Presidencies could be the ideal opportunity to promote a Just Transition, which is the only acceptable way forward. This event was the perfect occasion to present our Call to Action on a Just Transition. Read more.

CALL TO ACTION ON JUST TRANSITION
A new social contract for the well-being of people and the planet

A broken social contract is threatening our democracies. The one in which our democracies are rooted is breaking down in the face of multiple crises. The role of the welfare state is more crucial than ever as we live through transitions and transformations.
Welfare models in the EU have been built upon the false assumption of infinite material growth, leading to austerity measures, environmental pressures and excessive demand for continuous productivity. Europe needs a New Social Contract in which social and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.

We call for a paradigm shift, and we need it now. A Just Transition is the only acceptable way forward.
