China: Dangerous rival or cooperation partner?

How can EU-China relations develop in a changing world with geopolitical conflicts?

Book

09/12/2024

In today’s world, China has become an important player vis-à-vis the European Union.

This publication provides knowledge and considerate recommendations that constitute a valuable contribution to the development of a European strategy for China.

It is an invitation to study China’s economic and political development based on facts, and different opinions of people in business, politics and academia. It looks into history, economic competition, and the reasons and consequences of geopolitical confrontation.

With his methodical approach and his experiences as a visiting professor in China for the past ten years, Gerhard Stahl presents the current assets and challenges of this empire.

What about the EU, China’s main trade and economic partner? Are we partners, rivals, or both?

This book is not only a theoretical analysis but also a convincing plea for international cooperation to solve global problems like climate change and underdevelopment.

“This book is a unique invitation to study China’s economic and political development based on facts, and different opinions of people in business, politics and academia. It looks into history, economic competition, and the reasons and consequences of geopolitical confrontation. It is a convincing plea for international cooperation to solve global problems like climate change and underdevelopment.”

Prof. Dr Haifeng Huang, Co-Chancellor, China Institute for Responsible Management, Education and Sustainable Development, Associate Member, The Club of Rome and Research Fellow, The Woodrow Wilson Center

“This book asks the right questions at a time when too many Europeans cling to the illusion of a ‘back to the future’ approach hoping for a forever protective America. Gerhard Stahl dares to mention the elephant in the room: the European alignment on US foreign policy, even when this is not in the European interest. He presents a convincing case for pursuing an interest-dominated China policy rather than an ideological one.”

Jim Cloos, Secretary General of TEPSA (Trans European Policy Studies Association) and former high-ranking European official

“This book is not only a theoretical analysis. With his methodical approach and his experiences as a visiting professor in China for the past ten years, Gerhard Stahl presents the current assets and challenges of this empire. What about the EU, the main trade and economic partner of China? Are we partners or rivals, or both? This publication is an important and rigorous contribution to this debate.”

Enrique Barón Crespo, Former President of the European Parliament

“In today’s world, China has become an important player vis-à-vis the European Union. This publication provides knowledge and considerate recommendations that constitute a valuable contribution to the development of a European strategy for China. A must read.”

Bernd Lange, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Committee on International Trade
