The SPD has lost the fight against Angela Merkel and her CDU for the fourth time in a row. The worst result since the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany has a new element to it even for crisis-hardened social democrats. The party must look at the causes of the relentless decline if it is to have any chance of making a comeback.

Die SPD hat den Kampf gegen Angela Merkel und ihre CDU zum vierten Mal in Folge verloren. Das schlechteste Ergebnis seit Bestehen der Bundesrepublik hat auch für krisenerprobte Sozialdemokraten eine neue Qualität. Die Partei muss sich mit den Ursachen für den kontinuierlichen Niedergang beschäftigen, mag sie noch eine Chance auf Wiederaufstieg bekommen.
