The 7th East Asia Summit (EAS) held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on November 20 was the first major international summit that a re-elected US President Barack Obama attended. The EAS in many ways reflects the nascent Asian resurgence of the 21st century. Apart from the ASEAN plus 3 (the latter being China, Japan and South Korea), other major powers   at the EAS included the USA, Russia and India.  While the USA, China and Japan now constitute the three largest single-state economies and the EU, the largest GDP collective – a major economic transmutation is in the offing, with latent strategic implications – a shift that is of considerable relevance to both India and the EU.

This article by C. Uday Bhaskar, Director of the National Maritime Institute and formerly a Commodore with the Indian Navy, looks at the political, economic and military ramifications of the emerging triangle in 21st century geopolitics.
