The results of the Indian regional elections invariably affect stability at the level of the central government both in the short and long term. In this paper, , FEPS Correspondent in New Delhi looks at the polls held concurrently in Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest state with a population of more than two hundred million inhabitants; Punjab, the corn-chamber of India; the Himalayan hill-state of Uttarakhand; the tourist paradise of Goa and the insurgency-ridden Manipur in the North-East. He assesses how these elections could contribute to the overall trends and scenarios in the largest democracy the world.
