We start with a series of policy breakfasts on employment; we will follow with events and experts’ gatherings on fiscal rules, energy, care, climate, dark supermarkets, and migration. Big flagship events are also in the pipeline: the Recovery Watch conference, the Builders of Progress report launch, the Progressive Governance Summit, and the next national edition of Call to Europe!

In this series of policy breakfast meetings, experts and policy-makers will present potential policy solutions to tackle diverse aspects of employment.

Across the EU, nearly 13,5 million people are unemployed, and states struggle to cope with long-term unemployment, youth unemployment, and unemployment of the low-skilled. These challenges have been exacerbated by the pandemic and are likely to increase due to the digital and green transitions.

Against that difficult backdrop, what can the EU do? Join us to find it out!

Join the first big conference of the Recovery Watch project! The Recovery Watch is a sort of observatory providing an assessment of the social dimension of National Recovery Plans, also including a check of the public spending on the digital and ecological transition.

We will question whether EU member states have taken advantage of the Recovery and Resilience Facility to steer the socio-economic development in their country toward more equality.

Thomas Dermine, Belgian State Secretary for the Recovery & Strategic Investment, and Mario Nava, Director-General, European Commission, are among the confirmed speakers!

It is co-organised by FEPS, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and the Institut Emile Vandervelde.

PAST EVENT

Initiated in 2012 by the CEE Network for Gender Issues, the Korčula School has become a recognised regional South Eastern European think tank that focuses on progressive and social democratic policies to promote gender equality.

This event brought together progressive political leaders, experts, political activists and feminists, especially from Southeastern Europe, to discuss gender equality issues.

Mental health and suicide during the pandemic

Over two years on, the severe consequences of COVID-19 on mental health are continuing to reveal themselves and require a strong response to reduce suffering and preventable deaths.

In this series of policy briefs, FEPS and Fondation Jean-Jaurès join forces to explore how the pandemic and its social and economic effects impacted mental health and suicide in Europe using the results from surveys in six countries (Germany, France, Ireland, Poland, Spain, and Sweden) conducted in May 2022.

The briefs identify the level of risk and need, vulnerable groups, and risk factors, and they propose recommendations for suicide prevention for each country. Read more

What is the current situation regarding the implementation of gender mainstreaming in social democratic parties in the Western Balkan region?

The aim of this research paper was precisely to determine the answer to this question based on a set of selected countries in the region, namely Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia.

Based on the results obtained, this policy study concludes by providing a set of policy recommendations for social democratic parties. Read more

(…) The EU Pay Transparency proposal has the merit of ‘smashing the taboo!’ and the potential to empower women to access information. Subsequently giving them the right to seek more clarity on pay. Ania Skrzypek, FEPS Director for Research and Training, is interviewed in this Euractiv article by Davide Basso.

“Jean-Luc Mélenchon is a Eurosceptic in many of his approaches to European issues. And with Macron having lost his dominant position in Parliament, voters will be expecting a serious pro-European agenda” – which could therefore come from the “soc-dem”, Skrzypek told Euractiv journalist.

The social democrats do have an upper hand over the other political groups on the left, namely the “predictability” of their policies and actions, explained Skrzypek. This factor has contributed to the revival of centre-left parties in several European countries, including Spain and Poland, she added. Read more
