This event will take place in the context of the 66th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Its priority theme will be achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change.

FEPS, Fondation Jean Jaurès, PES Women and UN Women Germany join forces to bring forward a new social contract to the climate emergency rooted in ecofeminist values.

Svenja Schulze, German Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, will deliver the keynote speech.

On the occasion of the #IWD2022, FEPS launched a special campaign and presented several contributions – through all digital channels and different media, such as Politico, Euractiv and Social Europe – with a particular focus on economic and care inequalities. A few highlights:

– 🌍 EU Care Atlas, a new interactive data map to help uncover what the statistics are often hiding: how care deficits directly feed into the gender earnings gap. In the EU, women earn annually 36.7% less than men.

– 📚 Policy Study Creating Momentum for Fair Pay: Assessing Policies with Leverage.

– 🎧 FEPS Talks podcast Creating momentum for fair pay.

The time seems to have come when the EU has to assume itself as a geopolitical entity, with an enhanced role and responsibility in global governance and towards its neighbourhood.

It was the early spring of 1957, when a group of smartly dressed gentlemen were sitting at a table in Rome. After a long day of meetings, the gentlemen signed a document that laid the foundation for the future European Union: the Treaty of Rome.

Most ideas that originated there have been made reality over the last 65 years, like the creation of the customs union, a European Social Fund or even the establishment of the European Commission as we know it today. However, one fundamental principle is still missing proper execution. Article 119 asks for: “the application of the principle that men and women should receive equal pay for equal work”. Read more

Stephen Bevan, Head of HR Research Development at the Institute for Employment Studies and László Andor, FEPS Secretary General, discuss the impact of COVID-19 in the working conditions, based on the results of the new study about the UK, and compare the main conclusions with the situation in the countries and regions of the EU.

They highlight how the pandemic created the concept of “key workers” and gave rise to new practices like homeworking. The impact on social inequalities and flexible forms of employment and issues related to health at work were also discussed.

This paper analyses Europe’s alleged primacy in the regulation of emerging technologies and assesses whether the so-called ‘Brussels effect’ can help the EU achieve prominence as a global regulator in the digital space.

It finds that the Brussels effect while existing is not only exaggerated in the public debate but is also at risk of gradual erosion over the coming years.
