Vienna, 14 March, 18:30 – 20:00

The Russian military aggression and the ongoing war in Ukraine have redefined the parameters alongside which any discussions on Russia can be held. FEPS is gathering its experts along with carefully selected policymakers for a special conference in Vienna, which will look at how the current crisis will redefine the field of EU-Russia relations for the years to come.

EU – Russia relations has been a major topic for FEPS since 2020, with two series of policy briefs published in June 2021 and February 2022.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Euro, FEPS, the Jean-Jaurès Foundation, and the Initiative for Policy Dialogue co-organise a debate with Prof. Joseph Stiglitz on the achievements in economic integration since the launch of the single currency area.

The debate will also be an occasion to discuss how to reform the Economic and Monetary Union to ensure that imbalances are addressed and the Euro area is equipped with the policy tools needed to drive prosperity and stability.

This event will take place in the context of the 66th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Its priority theme will be achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change.

FEPS, Fondation Jean Jaurès, PES Women and UN Women Germany join forces in order to bring forward a new social contract to the climate emergency rooted in ecofeminist values.

POLICY BRIEF

This paper analyses Europe’s alleged primacy in the regulation of emerging technologies, and assesses whether the so-called ‘Brussels effect’ can help the EU achieve prominence as a global regulator in the digital space.

It finds that the Brussels effect, while existing, is not only exaggerated in public debate but is also at risk of gradual erosion over the coming years.

POLICY STUDY

Fair pay has reached a critical point in debates and discussions: many countries are sharpening their policies implementing fair pay and combining different approaches.

The goal of this Policy Study is to assess the different policy instruments to ensure fair pay and discuss their leveraging effects.

Ahead of International Women’s Day, FEPS and FES launch the EU Care Atlas, a new interactive data map to help uncover what the statistics are often hiding: how care deficits directly feed into the gender earnings gap. In the EU, women earn annually 36.7% less than men.

While the attention is often focused on the gender pay gap (which averages 13% in the EU), the EU Care Atlas brings to light the more worrisome and complex picture of women’s economic inequalities. The pay gap is just one of the three main elements that explain the overall earnings gap.

The EU Care Atlas is part of the #Care4Care project.

Vytenis Andriukaitis, former Commissioner for Health, FEPS President Maria João Rodrigues, and Prof. Mario Monti, former Prime Minister of Italy and former Commissioner, were among the speakers. In front of many incredulous eyes across the world, the Russian president Vladimir Putin has deployed a full attack on Ukraine. The attack is in line with his long-maturated plan to build a Eurasian sphere of influence.

According to his narrative, which takes its roots in the experience and the legends of the Russian empire, Ukraine is not a real nation. The country’s regions with a majority of Russian-speakers should become independent or be outrightly annexed by Russia. And Ukraine’s desire to move towards the European Union should be crushed. This is more than just a ruling: the very essence of our Union was challenged. If we want to preserve our sacred values, we need to defend them. Our credibility is at stake, and the virus of autocratisation proves to be very contagious. Read more

Creating momentum for fair pay

Building on some key insights and contributions from the brand new policy study “Creating momentum for fair pay: assessing policies with leverage” co-published by FEPS, Fondation Jean Jaurès and Fair Pay Innovation Lab (FPI), one of the co-authors of this publication, Katinka Brose (FPI Senior Strategy Agent), is interviewed by Laeticia Thissen (FEPS Policy Analyst for Gender Equality).

They discuss some good practice examples in countries like Iceland, Switzerland, Germany, France, Denmark or the UK, whilst assessing the opportunities of legislative measures ensuring pay transparency and enforcement mechanisms.
