Big week at FEPS! We have launched a new edition of the Progressive Yearbook! On this occasion, we awarded the FEPS Progressive Person of the Year. Besides, other big important events took place, in Lisbon and London, check out what you may have missed!

With the mission of bringing forward analyses of the key political developments of the year, the Progressive Yearbook focuses on transversal European issues that have left a mark on 2022, and brings future-looking insights for the coming year.

This fourth edition was published in a year of war and mostly looks at the conflict itself, the actors involved and the implications for Europe. It also includes two national cases which consider the state of democracy in Sweden and Greece, and a global perspective on the shifting world order.

It counts on renowned authors’ contributions, including academics, politicians, and analysts.
26 January – FEPS HQ, Brussels

On the occasion of the launch of the new Progressive Yearbook 2023, our Secretary General, László Andor, revealed and awarded FEPS Progressive Person of the Year: Grzegorz Pietruczuk, Mayor of Bielany, Poland.

Eminent speakers such as Maria João Rodrigues, FEPS President, Agnes Jongerius, MEP S&D, Margarida Marques, MEP S&D and some of the book’s authors shared their views on what the politics and geopolitics of 2023 have in store for us.

Every year FEPS chooses a Progressive Person of the Year to focus the limelight on a hardworking progressive who can show the way for others. This year we awarded Grzegorz Pietruczuk, Mayor of Bielany (Poland).

Grzegorz is a champion of local political leadership and humanitarian assistance. He has been at the forefront of supporting refugees from Ukraine, ensuring that those who arrive feel the solidarity of fellow Europeans and keep their faith in the possibility of a better life, in the community of European nations. The Russian aggression against Ukraine, with its manifold consequences, determined politics and life in Europe in 2022, and it will continue to do so in 2023. From the point of view of country size, Europe’s largest country invaded the second largest. The effects have been not only European but global. It is primarily the population of Ukraine that suffers incredibly from Vladimir Putin’s war, but the indirect effects have been felt worldwide in the forms of sky-rocketing food and energy prices, deepening financial crises as well as heightened geopolitical tensions. 23 January – Lisbon, Portugal

Together with the Karl-Renner-Institut and the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS), we co-hosted a public conference to jointly discuss proposals for the future of social democracy. Expert meetings between Portuguese government officials, high-level academics and the Next Left focus group also took place.

We heard inspiring speeches by renowned personalities such as José Luis Zapatero, former Spanish Prime Minister; Jamila Madeira, PS International Secretary; Augusto Santos Silva, former Portugal Foreign Affairs Minister; João Torres, PS Deputy Secretary General; Andreas Schieder, Head of the EP S&D Austrian Delegation, and Chair of the Next Left Research Program; Maria Maltschnig, Director of the Karl-Renner Institute and members of the Next Left Focus Group.

This event has been highly publicised in the press, such as in Observador, Público, Diário de Notícias, El Diario and many more. The video of the event will follow soon.

PAST EVENT
21 January – London, UK (Hybrid)

We hosted another edition of the New Year Reception, a longstanding tradition by the Fabian Society and FEPS, where speakers such as Katarina Barley, VP of the European Parliament; Pedro Silva Pereira, VP of the European Parliament; João Albuquerque, MEP; Sara Cerdas, MEP; Stewart Wood, Labour member of the House of Lords, and many more gathered to discuss the left’s ‘Pathway to Power’.

25 January – Stockholm, Sweden (expert meeting)

Together with Progressive Britain, we are partnering on a major project on the future of work and the need for social democrats to create and promote a new politics of work.

We brought experts and politicians from around the EU to discuss the implications of the changing geopolitical picture for work, workers and industrial strategy. The specific goal was to learn from the Swedish model of industrial relations.
