It has been one year since Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine is still standing.

One year ago, the Russian aggression against Ukraine was a shock for Europe. It was not, as we know, the start of the conflict, but a definite turning point that brought about immense destruction, loss of lives, and people’s forced displacement on an unprecedented scale.

At FEPS, we immediately devoted attention and energy to monitor the war and its potential short-term and long-term consequences. On this tragic anniversary, we pay tribute to the defenders of Ukrainian independence, we take the chance to look back at all our publications and activities on Ukraine, and we prepare to support the reconstruction of the country.

Whenever peace will come, it will offer Ukraine reconstruction as well as transformation. EU member states must remain united in these efforts, as they have been in the military and humanitarian support. FEPS will continue working on Ukraine and its relations with the EU.
PAST EVENT
23 February – Online

This event marked the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Paying tribute to the defenders of Ukrainian independence, we highlighted the EU solidarity efforts and preparations for reconstruction.
It was also an opportunity to take stock of FEPS work since February 2022 and outline forthcoming action. Among the participants, László Andor, FEPS Secretary General and Uwe Optenhoegel, FEPS Vice-President, editors of the soon-to-be-published FEPS-London Publishing Partnership book on the ongoing war in Ukraine, and many more.

Unbroken Ukraine. 365 days

One year of war has not broken Ukraine and its people. Unexpectedly, the country has withstood Russian aggression. Its cities are the object of strikes and carry the deep scars of the bombing. Some have been captured by the Russian armies and others have been liberated by the Ukrainian forces.
The Ukrainian population is suffering the consequences of Russia’s unprovoked invasion. Millions of them have left Ukraine and searched for rescue in the EU or the neighbouring countries, others are internally displaced or enduring the consequences of the conflict at home. But despite the destruction and the suffering, Russia has not bent the will of Ukraine, which enjoys the complete political support of the EU and its member states. Read more.

The EU’s external dimension of the Green Deal published at the start of 2021 focuses on a just green transition, calls for the phasing out of harmful fossil fuel subsidies and discourages further investments into fossil fuel-based energy infrastructure projects in third countries. These challenges evoke a vital discussion on the strategy the EU and its member states should apply to defend their citizens against various crises, secure increased autonomy against the actions of other superpowers and safeguard international cooperation. FEPS joins forces with S&D Group, Global Progressive Forum, Amicus Europae Foundation, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Foundation Jean-Jaurès, Daszyński Centre and Kozminski University, to debate on the EU Strategic Autonomy in an open public discussion broadcasted live.

Ensuring equality is an objective heavily impacted by the increasing digitalisation of our everyday lives. This new normal also poses a
series of new challenges, in particular to disadvantaged groups.

FEPS, Fondation Jean-Jaurès, PES Women and UN Women Germany join forces for a CSW67 parallel event. The aim will be to address the key political issues to anchor a more inclusive, socially empowering and fairer approach to the ongoing digital transition. It’s time to confront the resilience of existing non-discrimination and equality frameworks with the specific challenges posed by current digitalisation trends.
