On the 1st 2nd and 3rd November 1956, Pierre Mendes France organised a national conference in Caen to consider and reflect on the changes which were required to be undertaken to further develop research and higher education. Sixty years later, President Francois Hollande concluded the conference in Caen “Caen from 1956 to 2016. Research: building tomorrow.” Vincent Duclert returns to the 1956 conference and considers the importance the conference had on today; a unique event in history.
