On 25th March 2017 Europe will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, one of the most historic moments of the European integration process. According to the realistic and gradualist method of the founding fathers, the Treaties of Rome represented the first significant step towards the European Union, with the aim to build a supranational organisation based on common values: peace, freedom, democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights, equality.

Over the past sixty years, the European project has shown that people and nations can live together peacefully. Given the many economic and political challenges that the EU is currently facing, however, this anniversary should not be merely considered as a celebration in a historical perspective, but also as an opportunity to relaunch the European political process, by strengthening the EU institutions and implementing true continental policies.

To commemorate this forthcoming recurrence, the Foundation for European Progressive Studies – together with six of its member foundations, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Fondation Jean-Jaurès, Fondazione EYU, Fondazione Italianieuropei, Fundación Pablo Iglesias, Fondation Robert Krieps and Táncsics Alapítvány – promotes the international conference “Looking for a different Europe. Reflections and perspectives”, which will take place in Rome on 21th March 2017, from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm.
