Over the past decades, negotiations on new trade agreements have provoked a heated debate within the progressive camp. To promote a regime of international trade and investment properly governed and oriented towards more fairness, equality and progressive changes that meet the sustainable development goals as defined in the Agenda 2030, we need to bring together a wide alliance of progressive forces.

Against this backdrop, the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, German Italian Centre for Excellence Villa Vigoni, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Rome, and the Global Progressive Forum have joined forces to organise, with the support of the S&D Group in the European Parliament and the PES, an international conference on Trade Policy.

The objective is to substantiate a progressive position, with the input of politicians and officials springing from Social Democracy in the EU in charge of taking decisions both on governmental and non-governmental level, and promote a discussion on key features of a progressive European trade policy for the 21st century.
