This online conference is part of the Progressive Economic Policy Initiative.

Tuesday 26 May 2020:

  • Nadia Calviño, Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation
  • Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Laureate, Columbia University
  • Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for Economy
  • Moderation: Maria João Rodrigues, FEPS President

This is the momentum to discuss progressive economic policy and join progressive forces to change the economic paradigm that in Europe gives priority to macroeconomic stability instead of socio-economic and political stability.

Nadia Calviño, Joseph Stiglitz and Paolo Gentiloni participated in this online conference, moderated by Maria João Rodrigues. They debated what should be the socio-economic answers to the current emergency and looked at how the crisis changes the role of the state in the economy and how we have to develop new policies both for counter-cyclical response, as well as for a useful investment that can drive the different transformations that our society need.

This event was organised in partnership with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, the Pablo Iglesias Foundation and the Macroeconomic Policy Institute (IMK) of the Hans-Böckler-Foundation.

This online conference is part of the Progressive Economic Policy Initiative:

The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) and the Macroeconomic Policy Institute (IMK) of the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung yearly organise the “Day of Progressive Economic Policy” in Berlin.

The physical event couldn’t take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead,  a series of webinars were organised.

During the time of the German Presidency, from the end of June 2020 till the end of the year, the FES in partnership with FEPS, DGB and IMK run a blog project to discuss the different aspects of the European economic policy.

by DELO 28/05/2024
In an article in Delo, László Andor criticises Viktor Orbán government's economic policies, such as not allowing Hungary to join the euro area, which he believes would have helped curb inflation. He also criticises the government for blaming external enemies such as the President of the European Commission, to cover up its own failures.
