FEPS President at the SDG Summit and United Nations General Assembly in New York

14/09/2023

FEPS President Maria João Rodrigues is in New York this week on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the SDG Summit. She is participating in several meetings with UN representatives and UNGA side events and related activities.

FEPS President is also presenting the recently published Policy Study SDGs for all: Strategic scenarios, a groundbreaking research which equips policymakers with practical solutions to ensure the implementation of SDGs by 2050 by enacting five ‘extraordinary turnarounds’.

This report responds to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ call for more rigorous strategic analysis and foresight to support policymaking. Since the last four years, as the last UNDP Report on Human Development shows, there has been a general backtrack and increasing inequalities in the implementation of the SDGs.

The FEPS and Earth4All Policy Study brings together analysis from leading scientists, economists and modelers, offering proven ways to implement the SDGs and dramatically improve the course of policymaking.

The 2023 SDG Summit precedes the 2024 Summit for the Future, convened by UN Secretary-General to adopt a Pact for the Future with worldwide commitments about policy goals and solutions.

FEPS, as a central hub for European progressive thinking, decided to launch a project called ‘UNited for A New Global Deal’, including a high-level group of experts from across Europe, to be part of the processes leading up to the Summit of the Future, both through the intergovernmental and civil society channels.

The goal of this work is to feed in the content of the Pact for the Future and, more precisely, the New Global Deal, which will be necessary to enable more countries to implement the SDGs and all generations to improve their life chances.

Maria João Rodrigues was together with other panelists to discuss how the Summit of the Future may best accelerate the implementation of the outcomes agreed at the SDG Summit by promoting effective UN reform for stronger, more accountable and inclusive multilateral system.

Among the panelists were Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Executive Director Global Women Leaders and Former President of the General Assembly; Adonia Ayebare, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Uganda to the UN, and Arancha Gonzalez Laya, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs and Former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs.
