In recent years, there has been general backsliding and increasing inequalities in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many countries lack the means to do so. As proposed in the Secretary-General’s report, “Our Common Agenda”, a New Global Deal is necessary to enable all countries to implement the SDGs. Furthermore, the UN Secretary-General convened a Summit for the Future in September 2024 to adopt a Pact for the Future with commitments about policy goals and solutions to deliver the SDGs.

To contribute to global reflections for the Summit of the Future, the Foundation for European Progressive Studies, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s New York Office and its partners decided to publish a book “A New Global Deal: Reforming world governance” prepared by a high-level group of experts. The book aims to open a dialogue across Europe and between Europe and the other continents on the priorities of reforming global governance regarding policies and UN reforms to implement SDGs but also to address the current global challenges, notably climate change, poverty, digital transformation, and finance.

This event presented and reflected on the key findings from the book and discussed the opportunities to be presented by the Summit of the Future to address today’s and tomorrow’s global challenges for sustainable development.
