Algorithms and AI are reshaping decision-making in workplaces, public services, and democratic life. Coined as “algocracy” in our recently published book “Algorithmic rule – AI and the future of democracy in Sweden and beyond, edited by Simon Vinge and Maja Fjaestad, the chapters offer a timely and critical perspective on these developments, highlighting new risks such as increased worker surveillance, reduced autonomy, and biases.

To present the book’s findings and recommendations in Finland, FEPS organises a fringe event at the European Workers’ Council Seminar on 12 March 2025, hosted by TP (Teollisuuden Palkansaajat), one of the supporting unions of the FEPS-Nordic Digital Programme.

Among our confirmed speakers are:

  • Simon Vinge, Chief Economist, Akademikerförbundet SSR
  • Maja Fjaestad, Senior Advisor, Karolinska Institutet (KI), Associate Professor, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), former State Secretary for Health, Sweden
  • Anne Kaun, Professor of Media & Communication Studies, Södertörn University
  • Stefan Larsson, Senior lecturer, Associate Professor in Technology and Social Change, Lund University

This event is part of the FEPS–Nordic Digital Programme, a collaborative research and policy initiative led by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) in cooperation with Nordic think tanks and trade unions. In 2026, the programme will continue to focus on algorithmic management at the workplace, but also examine the impact of AI on decision-making, the public sector and worker productivity, empowering workers and shaping a fairer digital future.
