The EU as a peacekeeping force

Can the European Union still live up to its promise as a force for peace?

FEPS and FES Paris organised this timely and interactive fringe event during the YES Congress in Paris (July 16-18, 2025) to debate, challenge, and co-create a vision for a progressive and peaceful Europe, powered by the next generation.

This is more than a conversation — it’s a crucial political space for young Europeans to shape the future of the European Union. In a time of war on the continent and growing geopolitical instability, peace is not a given, and youth must be central to reimagining Europe’s global role.

At the same time, this is an essential forum to discuss the future of social democracy in Europe and the role that progressive forces must play in building a Union rooted in peace, solidarity, and justice. How can progressives drive reforms, defend democracy, and ensure that Europe remains a force for good in the world?

This session strengthened youth-led political dialogue and cooperation by:

• Facilitating collaboration among progressive youth movements across Europe
• Building the capacity of the YES leadership to influence EU policy-making
• Opening a bold, participatory dialogue with young progressive activists and emerging EU leaders

The day before, FEPS also organised a training session for Young European Socialists‘ leadership on youth, political influence and leadership.
