This event will present the paper series resulting from the year-long project “Voting during pandemics – making democracy resilient in turbulent times – experiences from Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe”.

While a lot has been said about COVID’s socio-economic challenges, there seems to have been relatively less attention paid to what it meant when it comes to political processes. This is the niche this publication addresses.

This project is run by FEPS, the Institute for Social Integration (ISI), Centrum Im. Ignacego DaszyDskiego, Masarykova demokratická akademie, Foundation for a Democratic Left and Drustvo Progresiva.

Africa Day, the largest event on Africa and international cooperation in the Netherlands, is back!

This year, the event – hosted by Foundation Max van der Stoel and FEPS – will focus on the importance of African voices in civic discussions and policy at the national and international levels.

A macro-development perspective on euro area imbalances
by Juan Montecino

This study argues that recent macroeconomic trends in the Euro Area suggest that Germany’s current account surpluses are responsible for a ‘Dutch disease’-style de-industrialisation in periphery economies. There are also tentative signs that the loss of competitiveness may leave lasting scars on these economies’ productivity levels.

Drawing on insights from development economics, the author of this publication provides an overview of the link between external competitiveness, current account imbalances and an economy’s long-term productivity growth.

This research is part of a cooperation between FEPS and the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD), based at Columbia University, founded by Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz.

Builders of Progress: The war in Ukraine through the eyes of youth

A new survey has found that nearly two-thirds of young people in Europe fear that the conflict could spread within the EU.

The findings are contained in a report called Builders of Progress: Europe’s NextGen ‘The War in Ukraine Through the Eyes of Youth’, conducted by FEPS and ThinkYoung, the research organisation that has coordinated the surveys and examination of the findings. Between 25 March and 7 April, the survey questioned 7,367 young Europeans aged 18 to 38 from France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, Poland and Romania.

Builders of Progress is a research project exploring the main concerns and hopes of young Europeans, and it is the successor to the FEPS Millennial Dialogue project.

The project is conducted with the support of Anny Klawa-Morf Stiftung, Društvo Progressiva, Felipe González Foundation, Fondation Jean Jaurès and the Party of European Socialists (PES).
Call for participants: Training Days for Social Business

FEPS, together with its observer member Anny-Klawa-Morf Foundation, is delighted to present a call for participants for the Training Days for Social Business.

The Training Days aim to strengthen the understanding of the importance of social business and share the knowledge about challenges and opportunities from companies and employees working in a decentralized self-management. The project aims to provide new ideas and findings to the social and political discourse in this field. You can find the detailed programme here.
May is typically a month marked by important exams. This year, the European stakeholders have been feeling that they as well should deliver and pass with flying colours the key historical test, which had been defined as the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE).

In anticipation of 9 May, the European Parliament took some ground-breaking decisions. These included a vote on the legislative resolution on direct universal suffrage. Read more
Europe is going through a housing crisis. Lower and middle-income families are priced out of gentrifying neighbourhoods. Homelessness is becoming endemic in most urban centres. People are dispossessed of their cities as the financial sector speculates, turning what should be a right for everyone into a financial asset.

Sanctions on Russia: the German and wider European debate

🎙️Prof Dr Jens Südekum (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) and Dr László Andor, FEPS Secretary General, assess the ongoing debate on the sanctions on Russia in Germany and in the rest of Europe.

They discuss what could be the consequences of harder decisions related to the oil and gas imports from Russia and how the current situation can affect the EU competitiveness and economic growth potential. Prof Südekum highlights the need for a more autonomous Europe in terms of defence as well as energy. The speakers also discuss the different scenarios this war can leave behind for Europe: continuing economic warfare with Russia, leading the reconstruction of Ukraine, and a reinforced economic architecture within the European Union.
