The Alliance of Mayors for Housing, composed of 15 major European cities, were in Brussels to demand swift action from the EU on housing. The report ‘The role of cities and regions in the EU – Affordable Housing Plan’ was presented at the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) Plenary and to the European Commission VP Teresa Ribera and Commissioner Dan Jørgensen.

This week’s newsletter features an op-ed by Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni and a video interview with Athens Mayor Haris Doukas. With these two leading voices of the Alliance, FEPS continues its commitment to ensuring that affordable and sustainable housing remains at the top of the agenda and supporting PES CoR’s housing campaign.

“We are discussing rearming, but Europe is a peace project and housing should be the first pillar”. In this episode, the Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas speaks about the housing crisis Europe is facing. 

On the ground, in cities like Athens, Barcelona and Rome, progressive mayors are already

putting in place measures to make housing more accessible. However, they cannot do it alone – they are calling for immediate, concrete actions and resources at the European level.

After the global financial crisis, real estate and construction sectors in Southern European countries became particularly dependent on foreign demand and tourism. However, these trends have been contributing to the actual and ongoing housing crisis rather than providing viable solutions.

Inflation preparedness in the EU

Lessons learned and a new Inflation Governance Framework
We will explore key lessons from the recent inflation episode and imagine a new inflation governance framework to prevent or mitigate supply-side inflation shocks in the future. 

We’ll present our latest policy study “The profit-price spiral in food and energy“, which examines the drivers of inflation in these critical sectors.

Following the Pact for the Future, adopted in 2024, the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development aims to accelerate action towards the SDGs.

This event delved deeper into building a consensus on concrete actions for transformative changes in the global financial landscape, discussing the review of the debt architecture, and aid effectiveness.

The meeting discussed lessons to be learnt from the anti-corruption demonstrations driven by students, the potential role of the Serbian opposition in a – hopefully – changing Serbian political landscape and the impact the events in Serbia might have on the neighbouring countries and the EU enlargement process.

Considering that the Commission has announced a performance-based approach to funding in one of the next MFF pillars, it is crucial to exchange learnings and improvements for the future budget.

The meeting also discussed the upcoming policy brief ‘’Lessons learned from the RRF for a future European fiscal capacity”.

This roundtable aimed to feed into that debate by presenting a series of policy proposals from FEPS’ latest policy brief “Demonetisation of anti-democratic and extreme content“, to S&D President Iratxe García Pérez and several MEPs, including Pina Picierno, Raphaël Glucksmann and Christel Schaldemose, among others.

FEPS Secretary General at the Regional Growth Conference

László Andor, FEPS Secretary General, took part in the 13th edition of the Regional Growth conference in Greece, which focused this year on regional policy ahead. 

In a high-level panel, he discussed the path toward the MFF and the future of cohesion policy in light of the challenges beyond 2027. Read more.

Ahead of their Strategy Day, we met with the German delegation at the Bavarian Representation office in Brussels.
