Feminist foreign policy in the EU and Latin America

Building bridges and sharing lessons learned

Policy Brief

03/10/2024

This policy brief explores the growing momentum behind Feminist Foreign Policies (FFPs) in Latin America, as countries like Mexico, Chile, and Colombia lead the way in implementing these transformative frameworks. While FFPs have often been associated with the Global North, Latin America’s unique history of feminist activism and engagement in both domestic and international spheres offers fresh perspectives on global power dynamics.

Drawing on the experiences of Latin American nations, this policy brief highlights best practices, such as adopting intersectional approaches and collaborating with local civil society to shape more inclusive foreign policies. It also identifies key opportunities for partnership between Latin America and the European Union, including integrating gender perspectives into trade agreements and promoting feminist economic systems centred around the care economy.

By fostering trans-regional knowledge sharing, this policy brief invites reflection on how both regions can jointly advance feminist principles in foreign policy, offering valuable lessons and strategies for a more equitable global order.

Explore this comprehensive analysis and discover how Latin American FFPs are reshaping international collaboration and influencing global feminist agendas.

FEMINIST FOREIGN POLICY SERIES

This study is part of the Feminist Foreign Policy Progressive Voices Collective (FFPPVC), led by FEPS and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, which questions traditional approaches to foreign policy to enable an alternative account of foreign relations from the standpoint of the most disadvantaged.

The project aims to advance concrete policy recommendations and will build on a multistakeholder feminist foreign policy community, which will gather feminist policy experts.
