Meeting the challenges from the populist right

A study of voter attitudes towards welfare and immigration in Denmark, Germany and Sweden

Policy Study

30/10/2024

This study, the outcome of a groundbreaking three-year project by FEPS, CEVEA, ARENA idé, and FES Nordics, dives deep into how social democratic parties (SDPs) in Europe—especially in Denmark, Germany, and Sweden—can reclaim their voter base and rebuild political momentum. Faced with a steady decline in support, SDPs are up against rising populist right-wing parties (PRPs) that have successfully capitalized on immigration anxieties, drawing in a significant number of working-class voters who once stood with the left.

Through extensive surveys, this research unpacks what SDPs voters care about: welfare, equality, and immigration. It reveals that while welfare and equality remain vital issues that unite voters across the working and middle classes, immigration is a more contentious topic. While working-class voters are more concerned about immigration, their support grows if immigrants are well-integrated socially and economically. Meanwhile, the new middle class remains largely open to immigration, creating a tricky balancing act for SDPs.

The findings suggest a powerful strategy for SDPs to counter PRPs: a renewed focus on welfare and economic justice, coupled with an immigration approach centred on successful integration and economic contribution. This dual focus could bridge social divides and foster a stronger, more cohesive voter base. Concluding with actionable strategies, this study maps out a promising pathway for SDPs to adapt to shifting voter dynamics, regain political strength, and stand resilient against the influence of populist right-wing movements across Europe.
