Call to Europe IV will focus on the need to construct a new progressive narrative rooted in solidarity, humanity and social justice regarding transversal policies of asylum and the EU neighbourhood.

Screening

On November 4th, S&D Group will host the screenning the film “Leave to Remain” which is based on a real-life story and directed by the BAFTA winner Bruce Goodison. The film will guide the audience through the personal story of an Afghan teenager and highlight at the same time the situation of thousands of asylum seekers who face similar circumstances of waiting their refugee status to be decided upon.  

The screening will be preceded with a reception hosted by FEPS with short speeches by Gianni Pittella, President of S&D Group at the European Parliament, and Ernst Stetter, Secretary General of FEPS. 

The evening will see the launch of the new number of the European progressive magazine Queries on migration with contributions from high level academics and civil society actors in the field. 

Conference

The conference on the 5th of November will bring together policy makers, academics and civil society specialists for a pan-European debate on migration, asylum and refugee policies. The conference will be structured in the following sessions:

  • Building a Common Progressive European Approach on Asylum (Session 1)
  • Conflict and asylum seekers in the MENA: a wake up call for EU neighbourhood policies (Session 2).

With keynote speeches of:

Massimo D’Alema, President of FEPS and former Prime Minister of Italy

Algelino Alfano, Minister for Home Affairs, Italy

Dimitris Avramopoulos, appointed Commissioner for Migration & Home Affairs (tbc)

Eugenio Ambrosinominated Regional Director for the European Economic Area, the EU and NATO of the International Organization for Migration (IOM)
