The pandemic and the various public health measures adopted to tackle its spread have an enormous impact on societies, further worsening the situations of those living in difficulty and generating new forms of vulnerability, marginality, and discrimination.

The Department of Culture and Society of the University of Palermo, FEPS, and Fondazione Socialismo are engaged in research projects, as the book Healthy democracy & democratic health, on the subject to investigate the impact of the pandemic on society – particularly on inequalities.

Prof. Stiglitz: NextGenEU was a leap forward, but the EU needs more flexibility

The NextGenEu Eurobonds issuance by the European Commission “was a very important step forward”, the Nobel Laureate in Economics Prof. Joseph E. Stiglitz said in an interview with FEPS Head of Communication Ainara Bascuñana. However, “the minimum change that you need is clearly saying you need more flexibility”, he added.

The interview was held in the framework of the talk co-organised by FEPS, the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD) at Columbia University, and the Jean-Jaurès Foundation “The 20 years of the Euro”.

Healthy democracy & democratic health

As vaccines allow a gradual return to a “new normal”, this book offers an invitation to collectively reflect on the crucial relationship between democracy and health in the COVID-19 health crisis context.

Each chapter speaks from a local perspective, acting as a cardinal point and a symbolic testimony to the transnationality of the crisis. Each author discusses one of the following topics with scientific data and arguments: Social inequalities and health; Individual security and freedom; Politics and technocracy; Health and democracy.

This publication complements workshops, training seminars and conferences organised by the Fondazione Socialismo and FEPS.
Ukraine has filed its application to join the EU. Brussels and the other European capitals have encouraged its ambition eagerly.

Recently, Italian leading newspaper Corriere della Sera featured an interview by Prime Minister Mario Draghi recalling the significance of the self-determination of the Ukrainian people. People who chose the ‘ultimate’ referendum – between life and death – not to succumb to Russian invasion while willing to be part of a united Europe. Read more

The politics of care

🎙️To explore the different care inequalities that directly feed into gender imbalances across all spheres of life, Labour MP for Birmingham and Shadow Minister Jess Phillips is interviewed by Laeticia Thissen (FEPS Policy Analyst for Gender Equality).

Building on the realities made evident by the EU Care Atlas — by FEPS and the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung — and the complex relationship between motherhood and equality, this podcast focuses on how care deficits permeate into various other gender gaps, including politics. It explores how female politicians have a central role in changing conventional ways of doing politics and in shifting the priorities towards a care-oriented society.
