Join the launch event of the book 📕 The Circular Economy and Green Jobs in the EU and Beyond.

The book clarifies the meaning and the implications of the circular economy across different contexts. It goes beyond simply arguing in favour of a circular economy and critically assesses the political and distributional choices that are made during this transition.

Edited by Janis Brizga and Saïd El Khadraoui and with a foreword by Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission.

This week, we held a new physical meeting of FEPS #OnestoWatch programme in Warsaw, co-hosted with Foundation Amicus Europae and Centrum im. Ignacego Daszyńskiego.

The ‘Ones to Watch’ programme, launched in 2015, is meant to gather a selected group of elected politicians aged between 35 and 45 from those member states that joined the EU respectively in 2004, 2007, and 2013.

Strategic Autonomy Tech Alliances

A significant number of digital technologies are essential for our economy, society and democracy. It is not feasible, nor is it desirable, for the EU to become self-sufficient in each of these.

Europe needs to bring together political support and industrial ecosystems in key technology areas and to build strategic autonomy tech alliances. This will allow the EU to build and sustain the necessary capabilities, capacities and control. Read the Policy Study

Digital strategic autonomy: the EU needs to go beyond legislation

To achieve Strategic Autonomy in the digital domain, the EU must do more than legislate, says FEPS Digital Policy Analyst Justin Nogarede in this article on Euractiv. The Recovery Watch project, in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and Institut Emile Vandervelde, kicked off in Brussels on 30 March 2022.

During the one-day exchange, European experts from different policy fields contributed to the four focus areas of the project: EU Governance, Climate Action, Digital Investment, and Welfare Measures.

The meeting was the occasion to discuss the upcoming policy studies, share insights on national recovery plans’ measures, and identify data sources, methods, and recommendations. More info
The newly released proposals from the European Commission on the circular economy broaden the scope of product governance and design. They provide an opportunity to move towards a holistic assessment that takes the entire product life cycle into account.

The sustainable product initiative in particular provides an opportunity to increase the scope of an integrated approach to the circular economy that has already been pioneered in areas like the regulation of batteries to all kinds of products. Read more

The war in Ukraine and the future of EU enlargement

The former EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Štefan Füle and FEPS Secretary General László Andor analyse the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the consequences for the EU, arguing that the common answer given by the member states will eventually make the EU stronger.

They also discuss the future of EU enlargement and what could potentially change in the accession process.
