After a long period of reflection and negotiation, the European Commission has finally presented its legislative proposals on a reform of EU economic governance in spring 2023. Whatever the outcome, the reform will set the new framework for member states’ fiscal policy. This workshop presented an opportune moment to discuss strengthening democracy in EU economic policy coordination and to address the democratic deficit within the current reform process.

Mark Dawson, Professor of European Law and Governance at the Hertie School of Governance, presented the findings of a study commissioned by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), offering concrete proposals to enhance democratic control and accountability in EU economic governance, followed by a panel discussion with experts and policymakers.

Among the speakers:

  • Stefan Körzell, Executive board member of German Trade Union Confederation
  • Mark Dawson, Professor of European Law and Governance at the Hertie School of Governance
  • Joachim Schuster, MEP, S&D
  • Rasmus Andresen, MEP, Greens/EFA
  • Marietta Karamanli, Member of the French Parliament
  • Maria João Rodrigues, President of FEPS
  • Dominika Biegon, Head of European and International Economic Policy at the Federal Executive Board of the German Trade Union Confederation
  • Cédric Koch, Policy Officer specialized in European and International Political Economy at FES.

The event took place at FEPS HQ, Avenue des Arts 46, 1000 Brussels. It was held in English and French, with simultaneous interpretation in German and English provided.

The study is available here.

In an article in Delo, László Andor criticises Viktor Orbán government's economic policies, such as not allowing Hungary to join the euro area, which he believes would have helped curb inflation.
