In the current global context, migration has once again returned to the top of the European and national political agenda. However, short-term, simplistic and narrow policy responses will not only fail to address existing challenges but will likely exacerbate the consequences of mismanagement.

Considering the significance of migration as a policy issue in the upcoming European legislative term, FEPS is continuing the crucial work of the Progressive Migration Group (PMG) in cooperation with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES).

On 11-12 June 2024, during a closed-door discussion the PMG focused on three key challenges, namely:

  1. The implications of the EU Asylum reform for the African countries, especially the New Pact on Migration and Asylum
  2. The labour shortage in the EU and the establishment of legal pathways
  3. The African perspectives on the complex interplay between EU migration and development policy on the continent.

This two-day meeting allowed for an in-depth exploration of these critical issues, considering diverse viewpoints and challenges. The aim was to provide a platform for dialogue on eye level, foster collaboration and design policy recommendations that can be addressed to decision-makers.  The policy recommendations will be discussed with different stakeholders including policymakers from African and EU institutions, national embassies, think tanks and civil society in the next PMG meeting on 10 September 2024 in Brussels.
