Talking about a socially Just Transition to climate neutrality today is not the same as doing so even twelve months ago. The war in Ukraine, the energy price crisis, and the rise of the far-right contributed to the changed landscape. Europe is severely impacted by the climate crisis and by deepening socio-economic inequalities. The ongoing social, climate and energy security crises are strongly intertwined and exacerbate each other.

Developing a “counter” Just Transition narrative composed of positive messages, relevant data and statistics has become necessary and urgent. We need concrete examples and powerful stories that tackle complex concepts.

Members of the European Alliance for a Just Transition will develop a common narrative that presents a socially Just Transition to climate neutrality as the way to address crises in the long term, and that provides evidence in support of this claim.

Together with the European Alliance for a Just Transition and SOLIDAR, we organized a workshop to discuss Just Transition narratives to be able to disseminate a common one that presents a socially Just Transition to climate neutrality as the way to address crises in the long term.

On this occasion, we had a presentation of the key findings from FEPS’ new policy study “Talking Green in Hungary: lessons on communicating environmental policies” written by:

  • András Bíró-Nagy, Director of Policy Solutions
  • Réka Hunyadi, Head of Communication at Greenpeace Central and Eastern Europe
  • Áron Szászi, Political Analyst at Policy Solutions
  • Vanessza Juhász, Research Fellow at Policy Solutions

We want to give valuable input for the development of effective green communication. Through a public policy analysis, this study aimed to understand the key challenges and formulate policy proposals for four key environmental issues in Hungary: air pollution, plastic pollution, energy efficiency of buildings, and the country’s energy mix.
