Next year, the EU is expected to launch a new EU Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). At a time of increasing securitisation, far-right governments pushing an anti-gender agenda and others dropping their commitments or cutting funding for women’s organisations and development, a stronger EU commitment is much needed.

During the European Parliament Gender Equality Week, we are taking a closer look at the roundtable event “Geofeminism and the WPS agenda: Lessons from the SWANA region”, chaired by MEP Chloé Ridel and organised by FEPS, in collaboration with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and Equipop.

Through a feminist geopolitical lens, speakers from the SWANA region (Southwest Asia and North Africa), including women local peacebuilders, will reflect on the increasing violence and violations of international law in their region. They will look at US and Israel’s efforts to redraw the map of the region by force, including by annihilating Palestinian self-determination efforts.

They will also propose alternative policy strategies based on the legal instruments and political thinking that underpin the WPS agenda. These reflections will examine the EU’s role and how its actions can be a positive force for inclusive peace in the region.

For more information regarding this event, please do not hesitate to contact Beatriz Abellán, Policy Analyst on International Relations (beatriz.abellan@feps-europe.eu) and Julia Wild, Acting Gender Coordinator and Project Officer (julia.wild@feps-europe.eu).
