The Politics of Polycrisis

BOOK LAUNCH – OXFORD, UNITED KINGDOM

The politics of polycrisis

Drawing on insights from key contributors from the EU and the UK, the book “The Politics of Polycrisis” presents new ideas for restoring social democracy, tackling topics including the green transition, the rise of platform work, industrial policy, and artificial intelligence.

Rising challenges of insecurity and inequality that plagued advanced capitalist countries in recent years have reinstated the need for social democratic parties to strategise for success.

With authors including Commissioner for Housing and Energy Dan Jørgensen, Members of the European Parliament Andreas Schieder, Hana Jalloul and Matthias Ecke, MP Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, academics Andrew Gamble and Patrick Diamond, and many more.

This book was unveiled at the 10th Oxford Symposium, the flagship event of the Next Left Research Initiative which has become a vital platform for academics, politicians, and leaders for a decade. The symposium featured a series of plenary sessions with prominent politicians and leading academics.

Ahead of the 2029 European Elections

POLICY STUDY & VIDEO SERIES

Ahead of the 2029 European Elections

By FEPS and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung EU Office

The journey to the next election begins the moment polls close on the last. The new policy studies “Ahead of the 2029 EU elections” and “The great countdown” delve into key questions shaping Europe’s democratic landscape: the effectiveness of transnational campaigns, the Spitzenkandidaten process, the potential of transnational lists, and the transparency of post-election negotiation.

The series reflects on lessons learned and a roadmap for change in light of the 2024 EU elections. The time to act is now—2029 is closer than we think.

📺A video series is also available! S&D MEPs Gabriele Bischoff, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, Brando Benifei, Andreas Schieder, and Katarina Barley shared their insights on these crucial questions through this video series.

Capital and wealth taxation in the EU

Large multinational corporations and the ultra-wealthy find ways to avoid paying their fair share, leaving the heaviest tax burden on workers and the middle class. This dynamic worsens income and wealth inequality. It is time to rebalance the tax system to alleviate the strain on workers and the middle class, while ensuring corporations and the ultra-rich contribute fairly. Right turns and Left leans: A New gender divide in young voters? with Gefjon Off

In this episode of FEPS Talks, Policy Analyst Matteo Dressler sits down with Dr. Gefjon Off to unpack emerging differences in the political attitudes and voting patterns of young men and women.

Drawing on Gefjon’s own research and insights from a rapidly evolving field, we explore whether young men truly gravitate to the right while young women are growing more progressive. And, if so, what these shifts mean for progressive policymakers as they chart a path forward.

Brace for impact!

The new Trump administration is still in the making. A focus on the US electorate’s attitude and concerns, and what this means for the future of the Democrats and the road ahead under the new president, is at the core of this issue’s Special Coverage US elections: more than angry men. The shift to the right concerns the EU too, with a growing number of EU member states now governed by far-right parties.

In our Focus The far right demolishes the welfare state, we look at how the governments of Finland, Hungary and Italy are dismantling labour and social protections, deepening inequalities along the way.

The Dossier The demographic transition: risks and opportunities analyses how promoting inclusive, human-centred and rights-based policies, as well as migration, can play a role in tackling the EU’s demographic imbalances. Another challenge for the EU is corruption – in the Dossier Blunt weapons? Europe’s fight against corruption our authors analyse the efficiency and impact of the EU’s instruments to fight it. Read more.
