On the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we continue to stand with the people of Ukraine and support its full independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. There can be no negotiation about Ukraine without Ukraine and the EU at the table.

The social impacts of war must remain a central priority beyond immediate military and geopolitical dimensions. Peace cannot be defined solely in terms of defence capabilities or military expenditure. It must also mean protecting society’s social fabric.

FEPS continues to devote resources to monitoring the war’s potential short-term and long-term consequences and Ukraine’s reconstruction. The new policy series ‘Progressive Ukraine’ exploring crucial social issues such as housing, healthcare, gender equality, education, and labour; the event ‘Applying a gender lens to Ukraine’s reconstruction’; the launch of the FEPS’ Open Progressive University ‘Progressive Ukraine’ programme in collaboration with the S&D; and the book ‘Europe and the war in Ukraine’, are some examples of our activities.

A key priority is guaranteeing that Ukrainian women play a central role in rebuilding their country. Female perspectives and leadership remain underrepresented in decision-making spaces, despite women being at the forefront of humanitarian response.

In this episode, Vita Shnaider, a Ukrainian anthropologist and a researcher of housing policy, joins us to discuss how the country’s housing sector has been reshaped by a decade-long war and Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 in particular.

From rent regulation to social housing, we dive into the challenges and opportunities for Ukraine’s current war effort and its post-war recovery.

Schnaider is the author of the policy study Transforming housing policy in war-affected Ukraine.

The Open Progressive University is a first-of-a-kind e-learning platform established by FEPS to empower the progressive movement in Europe by broadening access to expert knowledge.
