Between the heatwaves and the wildfires, this summer was not as restful as we had hoped. Yet it showed us, more than ever, why EU solidarity and collective action are crucial.

Housing in Practice – Greece

Towards cooperative housing and collective ownership

Athens has become one of Europe’s most visible examples of what happens when housing markets are left to financialisation and speculation. 

With the EU Affordable Housing Act due to be adopted on 9 September 2026 and an EU Housing Summit set for November under the Irish Presidency, there is political momentum to strengthen the EU’s efforts in tackling the housing crisis. To translate these commitments into meaningful change, it is crucial to learn from local examples.

The Progressive platform for international development held its second session, bringing together high-level development experts and progressive policymakers from the European Union and the Global South to discuss how to strengthen the EU’s role in international development and build a strategic alliance with the Global South.

The platform is a project by FEPS, in collaboration with SOLIDAR, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and Fondation Jean-Jaurès. Other contributors to this session are CeSPI, Avanza and the Olof Palme International Center Centre.

This policy brief analyses the ongoing reconfiguration of Euro-Mediterranean energy relations and looks at ways to ensure the EU-North Africa energy cooperation is fair for everyone.
