On 30 May 2026, Maltese voters headed to the polls to elect a new parliament in a snap general election called by Prime Minister Robert Abela. What factors will shape the election outcome? Can the governing Labour Party secure another mandate? What governing scenarios could emerge after the vote, and how will the country’s key political actors navigate the post-election landscape?

Beyond the above questions, this online roundtable examined the campaign’s dominant themes. The discussion also assessed turnout and the broader information environment, including political polarisation, misinformation and the growing influence of social media campaigning. Particular attention was paid to the strategies and performance of the Maltese Labour Party.

Finally, the online roundtable explored the implications of the election for Malta’s EU policy and placed the result in a broader European context.
