Amid rising threats to democracy, anti-gender backlash, and widening gender gaps at the ballot box, the FES Vienna’s upcoming Democracy Talks explored how inclusive, gender-equal policymaking can help renew and strengthen European democracies.

Andrea Pető (Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University – CEU and FEPS Scientific Council Member), co-editor of the new book A New Gender Equality Contract for Europe, presented some of its core arguments.

This timely volume charts concrete pathways for advancing gender equality through policymaking as a means to strengthen democracy in Europe, bringing together leading feminist thinkers and EU policy experts to imagine a new “gender contract” for Europe.

Barbara Hoffmann, Head of the Gender Equality Policy Department at the Karl-Renner-Institut, offered reflections on the book and shared strategic insights on how Austria and other European countries can strengthen democracy by advancing gender equality. Afterwards, we had an open discussion.
